Land Preservation Monitoring – FULL
November 18, 2023 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm
Help preserve land and wildlife habitat in the Gunpowder Watershed for future generations
Did you know that the Gunpowder Valley Conservancy (GVC) has facilitated the preservation of 2000+ acres within the Gunpowder Watershed? We are actively seeking new volunteers to serve as Land Preservation Monitors who play an important role in the process.
Registration is now closed for this event (11/15/2023). You can contact GVC by email if you’d like to be notified of our next training in 2024. Thanks again for your interest.
When a landowner decides to preserve their land, they enter a voluntary legal agreement (conservation easement) that protects the property’s conservation value (agricultural, historical and/or natural) for future generations. Each year, GVC is required to monitor all such conservation easements to ensure the easement’s terms are being upheld. Monitoring also provides an opportunity for GVC representatives to meet with landowner(s) to discuss any recent concerns (e.g. erosion, non-native invasive plants).
EVENT SCHEDULE
The general schedule is:
- Meet at Manor Mill (2029 Monkton Rd, Monkton, MD 21111) for light breakfast, orientation, and assignment to a team led by an experienced monitor.
- Team field work monitoring properties at locations in northern Baltimore County. Teams will carpool.
- Lunch at Woodfire Kitchen ( 17114 York Rd, Parkton, MD 21120) provided by GVC. This will also include time for teams to debrief and submit their monitoring documents.
WHAT TO EXPECT
- Volunteers should wear long pants and waterproof shoes or boots. Bring bug spray, sun protection, a hat and a water bottle. Please dress appropriately for the weather. Walking on rough terrain is likely.
- GVC encourages participants to consult CDC guidelines for determining when to isolate due to COVID exposure
